The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。故事发生在北京。丁伟（李健 饰）与冯川（肖肖 饰）相爱三年，第一次被冯川领回家见丈母娘（王丽云 饰），当岳母知道他没房子时，态度急转之下，明确表态没房甭想结婚。远在农村的父母知道了儿子的难处，千方百计给他筹钱，这让当儿子的丁伟十分愧疚，毕业几年了他还没给父母寄过一分钱。这期间，冯川妈见丁伟买房无望，就张罗着给女儿介绍有车有房的罗杰（郭晓秋 饰），冯川死活不同意。丁伟费尽周折靠贷款买下房子，但还贷的压力接踵而来，他与冯川的生活水平直线下降，两人的感情也随之发生了变化，这让丁伟苦不堪言，他开始反思自己的生活……。
