厂工何家栋为救孤儿石头（况天昊）牺牲，其妻子黄翠兰收养了石头。结果好人没好报，不仅家产全被堂哥何二狗一家霸占，还遭到何二狗的长期刁难打压。为了让养子改变命运，也为了完成自己跟丈夫的心愿，黄翠兰励志供石头上学，却先后遭遇入学测试、没有户口……。饭岛夫妻买了块儿地准备自己盖栋房子，于是拜托了妻子的学弟柳泽进行设计，妻子的父亲长一郎担任木工主任。柳泽是美国留学归来小有名气的室内装潢设计师，满脑子现代艺术观念，而长一郎是个一流的日式传统木工，在他眼里没有比和式住宅更美好的事物，建造工作就在两个人不断的摩擦中开始......。After the relatively low box office takings of 'Intolerance', D.
