第五季的故事时间设定在1931年美国大萧条时期，同时闪回到1884至1897年间Nucky" Thompson的童年和少年时代。。故事以纪录片的方式展开，一队纪录片摄制组采访了一位深居简出的疯人画家，但之后他们发现这位疯子似乎人间蒸发了，而他们这部纪录片成为解谜的关键。而片尾疯子那句“我们到底谁才是疯子？”令人颇感神秘。。The nightmare was about a demonic possession.
