清朝末年，江南小镇的富商白老爷被人杀死，酿成地方大案。赏金猎人安聘远受命前往白沙镇侦破疑案，他慢慢发现白老爷是因为知道一个秘密而死的。白家的四位夫人、日本人、土匪纷纷浮出水面，都为这个秘密费尽心机。随着案情逐渐水落石出，安聘远发现原来自己父亲和白老爷之死，都是因为一张金矿地图。十三年前，日本青龙会出钱请父亲勘探地质，不料发现了大型金矿；安聘远父亲不愿把金矿图纸交出而惨遭毒手；白老爷亦是被日本青龙会的势力所害。安聘远凭借着聪慧勇敢，拨开重重迷雾，终于查出幕后的凶手，得到了金矿地图。面对日本人的威胁，安聘远把地图扔到火里，他坚信，只要这座金矿还在中国的大地上，迟早有一天我们的后代会找到它，它永远属于中国。。The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely.
